Swanville — Parents, grandparents and siblings joined students at the Nickerson School in Swanville for a cookout-style lunch and a talent show Friday afternoon, June 13.

The school's head cook, Debbie Mitchell, put on the highly anticipated annual cookout with the help of volunteers, a meal that included hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chips and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Following the cookout, families joined the students on the playground for games of four square, kickball and other outdoor fun before heading into the gym for the talent show, which included more than 20 acts this year.

Fifth grader Madison Chiaramonte served as the mistress of ceremonies in addition to putting on a boxing demonstration with the help of RSU 20 School Resource Officer Greg Stearns, who is also a coach with Wyman's Boxing Club in Stockton Springs.

The kindergarten class entertained the crowd with the class song as well as a tune about insects, while first graders performed songs about gardens and sunflowers. The second graders donned their wide brimmed hats and bonnets and sang "Old Dan Tucker" in celebration of the pioneer unit the students completed earlier in the year, while a variety of students offered up individual acts as well. Student Zachary Armstrong played the harmonica for the crowd, and  Ethan Hall played guitar and performed OneRepublic's "Counting Stars."

Some students, like Briana Bunker and Anthony Frost, combined music with their use of hula hoops when they wowed the audience with their demonstration to the tune of The Trashmen's "Surfin Bird."
