May 17, 2017
“Path to the Stream" is a painting by interior Maine artist Marsha Donahue, this year’s Festival of Art Guest Artist.

Belfast — The 15th annual Festival of Art, sponsored by the Senior College of Belfast, will open with a first-viewing reception with live music Thursday, June 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the University of Maine's Hutchinson Center, 80 Belmont Ave./Route 3. Admission is free.

The annual non-juried exhibition features both amateur and professional artists, working in all media aside from video and installation art. The artists, age 55 and up, come from all around the state. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Many participating artists will be at the opening reception to meet one another, see the completed exhibit and talk with visitors. Belfast Bay Fiddlers will provide music for this festive event, and festival volunteers provide a delicious assortment of complementary finger foods. Wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

This year’s Festival of Art features the work of more than 100 artists. The exhibition will continue Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, June 4, from noon to 3 p.m. Featured artist for the 2017 Festival is artists and teacher Marsha Donahue, who will give a multimedia presentation Saturday at 1 p.m.

Donahue owns North Light Gallery in Millinocket and is “well known for her clean, clear sure-handed watercolors of the Katahdin region and for her strong advocacy for its conservation,” according to Down East magazine. She is a native of Waterville who grew up in Pittsfield, West Paris and Auburn; and studied art at Portland School of Fine and Applied Art (now Maine College of Art) and American University. She worked in art galleries in Washington, D.C., and Portland before moving to Millinocket.

Donahue’s guest artist presentation will be in the Hutchinson Center auditorium at 1 p.m. Sunday. This event is free and open to the public, scheduled this year on the closing afternoon of the Festival to make it convenient for the participating artists to attend.
