Searsport — Shortly before a four-car Labor Day accident on Route 1 in Searsport would back up traffic and make passage of emergency crews difficult, a call went out to area fire departments to respond to a structure fire in Searsport.

The home at 12 Sanborn Valley Road, about a quarter-mile down the private dirt road off Harris Road, was completely engulfed in flames at the time of the call, at about 12:20 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1.

Searsport Fire Chief Andy Webster said Searsport, Stockton Springs, Prospect and North Frankfort fire departments responded to the scene and put out the flames, but the structure was a total loss. Crews were able to pump water from Beaver Bog on the property.

"For being a holiday weekend, and with the heat and stuff, it went very well," Webster said.

Webster said the source of the fire was unknown at the time, but the fire marshal would be investigating. David Greenleaf was renting the home and was away at the time of the fire.
