Fire heavily damages interior of Goose River Grocery

Cause of fire still under investigation

Photo by: Ben Holbrook Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that damaged the interior of Goose River Grocery the evening of Tuesday, July 15.

Belfast — A fire heavily damaged the interior of Goose River Grocery during the evening hours of of Tuesday, July 15.

Belfast Fire Chief Jim Richards said his department responded to Goose River Grocery at 9:03 p.m. He said when firefighters arrived, fire was visible coming out of a window where an air conditioning unit was located and heavy smoke was pouring out of the building.

It took approximately 10 to 15 minutes for emergency responders to knock down the blaze, which was mostly contained to the interior of the building. Richards said the fire and smoke were concentrated near the rear portion of the building.

An investigator with the fire marshal's office was on scene Wednesday, July 16, investigating the cause of the fire. Richards said at this time, it is still unknown what started the blaze.

Ken Grimes, of the office of state fire marshal, said Friday, July 18, investigators are continuing to collect evidence and hope to determine a cause by next week.

Richards said 24 firefighters responded to the fire after it was reported by several people in the area.

No one was injured as a result of the fire and Richards said the interior of the building sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage.

The building was insured, Richards said.
