Unity — Police arrested a Florida man who was wanted on felony warrants including cocaine possession and issuing bad checks at a residence in Unity Sunday, Feb. 16.

In addition, deputies with the Waldo County Sheriff's Office charged 60-year-old John Travers with being a fugitive from justice after police found him at a Thorndike Road residence at about 7:30 p.m.

Lt. Jason Trundy with the Waldo County Sheriff's Office said local law enforcement learned of the outstanding warrants for Travers after receiving a phone call from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office in Florida.

"They called us and said they were willing to extradite him," said Trundy.

Trundy said Florida police had warrants for Travers charging several probation violations dating back to when he resided in that state, violations that included possession of cocaine and writing bad checks.

Trundy said Travers has lived in Maine "off and on for quite a few years" and after learning Travers was on probation locally, deputies contacted Travers' probation officer and obtained his Unity address.

Trundy said deputies then went to the residence and arrested Travers without incident.
