Frankfort tops Liberty to lead best-of-three championship seriesWaldo County title clash continues June 21 in Frankfort
Liberty — The Waldo County Little League baseball championships are officially under way with Liberty and Frankfort clashing in a best-of-three series for the coveted crown.
Frankfort picked up the game one victory as it ran away with the contest late en route to a 14-4 win Tuesday, June 19 in Liberty.
Game two of the series will be on Thursday, June 21 at 6 p.m. in Frankfort. Emmett Shell, who tossed a perfect game with 18 strikeouts in the Western Division championship game, will pitch for Liberty, which will try to force a winner-take-all final on Saturday, June 23 at 10 a.m. in Liberty.
In Tuesday's first game, Eric Gower (4 singles), Ben Powell (double, triple), Spiegel (4 singles) and Cole Frey (2 singles) led Frankfort, while Shell (home run, single), Derrick Tyler (2 singles), Riley Boulay (double) and Alex Cleaves (single) keyed Liberty.
Garrett Butler, Luke Davis and Tyler all pitched for Liberty, allowing 15 hits and four walks, with seven strikeouts. Alex Runci and Ben Powell pitched for Frankfort, allowing six hits and two walks, with 10 strikeouts.
Frankfort jumped to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second inning and another in the third, while Liberty rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the third.
Jack Vallou walked and Tyler singled, while Boulay doubled in Vallou to put the hosts on the board. Butler then plated Tyler with a fielder's choice and Shell blasted a two-run homer to left field to the game.
Frankfort added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings and exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth to pull away.
