‘Gasland Part II’ in Belfast

Sep 04, 2014
“Gasland Part II,” part of the HBO Documentary Films series, will be screened this month at Belfast Free Library.

Belfast — “Gasland Part II” is a new film that explores the controversial method of extracting fossil fuels known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking.  It will be shown Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. in the Abbott Room of Belfast Free Library, 106 High St.

The sequel to the much acclaimed and award- winning “Gasland” (2010, USA) is narrated by and stars filmmaker and activist Josh Fox. It explores how and why fracked wells leak over time, resulting in contaminated water and air, disrupting families and causing harm to the environment. It also touches on the alliance between government and the energy industry.

“Gasland Part II” was selected as the Best Documentary winner by the Environmental Media Association and was hailed by the New York Daily News and Los Angeles Times. It is a film that has left many viewers angry and frustrated that the practice of fracking continues and seemingly grows, despite the ever-increasing protest.

The screening of “Gasland Part 2” is part of the Peace and Justice Group of Waldo County’s monthly community forum series. Admission is free (donations accepted), and a discussion will follow. For more information, call Bob Shaw at 338-4450.
