Grass fire burns more than two acres in Knox

Knox — A wind-driven grass fire on Flat Road in Knox burned more than two acres before it was extinguished during the afternoon of Sunday, April 20.

Regional Forest Ranger Matt Gomes said an individual on Flat Road had a valid permit to burn that day, but the wind spread the flames to the grass and quickly spread across the property. Because of all the dead, dry grass in the area, Gomes said approximately two and a half acres were burned before the flames were extinguished.

“This is a very common scenario this time of year,” Gomes said.

He said no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Gomes said this time of year is a very active period for the forest rangers because the dead layer of grass and brush is easily ignited.

According to statewide media reports, forest rangers responded to multiple reports of grass and wildfires on Sunday.
