Hawks fly past Mustangs in gridiron battle

Nunn, Davis, McGray pace Mount View's offense

Thorndike — Veteran coach Jack Brady and the Mount View football team have been in the shoes of the Hermon Hawks.

Only five years ago, the Mustangs were competing in their first varsity games in school history and taking their lumps along the way. And then Mount View slowly, but surely, made progress.

However, the Hawks (3-2), now in only their second season after finishing 1-7 last year, appear to have made great strides quickly and that translated into a 53-20 win over host Mustangs (0-5) on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 29.

For Mount View, Will Nunn rushed for 112 yards and one touchdown, while Steven Davis hauled in two catches for 85 yards, including a 74-yard scoring pass from Kenny McGray.

Mustang quarterback McGray was 7-of-16 for 139 yards, with one touchdown and one interception in the loss.

Clint Spaulding also barreled in from one yard out on his lone carry of the game, while John Axsom added a two-point conversion for the hosts.

"I thought Hermon played very, very well," said Brady. "Last year, they only had one senior, so all of these kids had a full year of varsity experience under their belt. And they played that way. They made some mistakes, but not many."

While Brady had no surefire stats for the Hawks, the backfield duo of Kyle Hornyak and Cody Reynolds accounted for many touchdowns and "really ran us over."

Leading the Mount View defense were Ricky Moulton (5 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles), Jake Blanchette (5 solos, 4 assists), Nunn (5 solos, 4 assists) and Spaulding (7 solos, 2 assists).

In the Maine Principals' Association Crabtree Points for Eastern Class C, Mount View (0-5, no points) is 12th, while Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft (4-0, 152.6316 points) is first in the 12-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
