Healthy Eagles soar to wins over 'Stangs in Jan. 22 games

Previously-scheduled contests postponed due to influenza outbreak

The Lincoln Academy boys and girls basketball squads looked healthy enough Jan. 22 against Mount View of Thorndike as the teams hit the courts looking for late-season victories in the always-competitive Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B division.

The Eagles, who were forced to postpone their initial Jan. 11 contests with the Mustangs due to an influenza outbreak at their school, soared to victories over Mount View in the makeup games.

The Mustang boys forced overtime in Thorndike, but the Eagles eventually prevailed 58-54, while the Mustang girls were downed 43-29 in Newcastle.

Boys basketball

Lincoln Academy 58, Mount View 54 (OT)

At Thorndike Jan. 22, the visiting Eagles netted 8-of-10 free throws (80 percent) in overtime to push past the host Mustangs and prevail by four points. Lincoln Academy led 19-5 after the first quarter, 27-15 at halftime and 37-31 after three quarters before going on a 17-11 fourth-quarter run, which knotted the game 48-48 at the end of regulation.

Steven Davis netted 18 points for Mount View, while Nathan Wren added 16; Kenny McGray, nine; Jack Simpson, six; Mikey Hustus, four; and Gavin Simpson, one.

For Lincoln Academy, Devin Scherer dumped in 17 points, while Tom Masters and Luke Bibber each added 11; Travis Creamer, seven; A.J. Oliver, six; Sawyer Pinkham, five; and Caleb Farrin, two.

The 'Stangs were 7-of-20 (35 percent) from the foul line, while the Eagles were 11-of-17 (65 percent).

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B, Mount View (1-11, 5.4012 points) is 19th (last), while Presque Isle (11-2, 72.0679 points) is first in the 19-team region. The top 13 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Girls basketball

Lincoln Academy 43, Mount View 29

At Newcastle Jan. 22, the Eagles outscored the Mustangs in the first three quarters and coasted to victory over the visitors. Lincoln Academy led 12-6, 25-13 and 37-15 at the quarter breaks.

Janelle Thornley scored 14 points to lead Mount View, while Jenni Nadeau added six; Meredith Picard, two; and Courtney Morse and Kaitlyn Leavitt, both one.

For Lincoln Academy, Jen Genthner tallied nine points, while Hayden Campbell and Leszie Sandefur each added six; Danielle Pierce and Ashley McKenney, both four; and Alyx York, Barrett Campbell, Merissa Look, Maria Naylor, Olivia York, Taylor Oliver and Danielle Pinkham, all two.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B, Mount View (2-10, 4.8765 points) is 16th, while Presque Isle (13-0, 77.8704 points) is first in the 19-team region. The top 13 teams qualify for the playoffs.
