Miss Penobscot Valley, 20-year-old Hillary Hoyt of Frankfort, will represent that area in the 75th Anniversary Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant to be held at the Crooker Theater at Brunswick High School June 17 and 18.

Hoyt, a sophomore at the University of Maine majoring in elementary education with a liberal arts concentration and a minor in dance, will present a lyrical dance to the song "Dance with My Father" by Kellie Coffey for her talent. Hoyt, who lost her father to cancer just before her freshman year in college, dedicates her performance to him and all the times she would dance by standing on his shoes.

Her platform is "Make It Happen through Volunteerism." With her parents as role models, Hoyt grew up being taught that if she saw something that was wrong, she could help fix it through some type of volunteerism. She has done so with such organizations as the Girl Scouts and her service sorority.

The Miss Maine Scholarship Program, the official state preliminary to Miss America, is a not-for-profit organization which maintains a tradition of empowering young women to achieve professional and personal goals.

Miss Maine receives thousands of dollars in college scholarships, as well as a paid trip to compete for Miss America. Each contestant, regardless of placement, earns valuable college assistance.

Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. This assistance is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss America, but is available to the more than 12,000 young women who compete in the state and local competitions as well.

To support Hoyt in her quest for the title of Miss Maine 2011, tickets may be purchased by calling Ellie Eramo at (207) 443-4370, emailing your request to eaeramo@localnet.com, mailing your order to Ellie Eramo, 442 Bath Road, Brunswick, ME 04011, or purchasing them at the door on the nights of the pageant.
