Rockport — In a wonderful annual sign of the winter holiday season, some of the most beautifully skilled figure skaters in the area glided onto the ice at the Midcoast Recreation Center Friday night for The Skating Club of Maine — Coastal Region's show, Celebration on Ice, which was followed by an invitation to all to skate with Santa.

As always, the show, themed this year as "Angels," again proved a rousing success with plenty of color, festive lights, beautiful, upbeat music and electrifying performances by wonderfully talented youngsters.

The holiday favorite, directed by Jennifer Cormier of Skating Club of Maine — Coastal Region, featured four soloists: Kacey Montana, Kimberly Roman, Delia Saastamoinen and Natasha Shacklett.

There also was specialty numbers by the Pursuit of Excellence, Basic Skills and Snowplow Sam classes skating to songs such as “City of Silver Dreams” by Sugarland, "Last Christmas” by Glee, “I Saw Three Ships” by Sting and “Angels” by David Archuleta.

The synchronized skating group, Subzero, performed to “Rise,” a stirring and enthusiastic piece. The group, now 20 skaters strong, has incorporated new moves, patterns and lifts in their recent practices.

This is the third year the Skating Club has offered a synchronized skating class. Due to its popularity, the group now offers a Junior Synchro class, students from which performed in the show, skating to “Sleigh Ride.”

Proceeds from ticket sales to the show and sale of decorated wreaths benefit the Skating Club of Maine Learn To Skate programs.
