Jones wins House District 45 seat after recount
Augusta — A recount for the House District 45 seat is complete with Democrat Brian Jones beating Incumbent Republican Rep. Ryan Harmon by a vote of 2,253 to 2,222.
Unofficial results showed Jones beating Harmon by a vote of 2,252 to 2,219, according to previously published state results. Under state statute, a candidate must request a recount within five business days of the election from the Secretary of State’s Office, as there is no automatic recount process.
During a telephone interview Monday, Nov. 19, Jones said he was pleased with how the recount turned out, but admitted he was surprised at how closely contested the seat was in House District 45.
As he prepares to take his seat, Harmon said he attended a freshmen orientation for new legislatures, and has already begun to receive requests for legislation. Overall, Jones said he was pleased with how he and Harmon ran their campaigns.
"I think I ran a pretty issues oriented campaign, as did my opponent, Ryan Harmon," Jones said.
As part of the recount process, the Maine State Police collect the ballots and keep them in a secure police facility until the date of the scheduled recount. During the recount, representatives for both candidates and staff members from the Secretary of State’s Office manually review each ballot to determine the official vote tally.
According to a press release from the Secretary of State's Office, if enough disputed ballots are produced as a result of the recount, the House of Representatives determines which candidate to seat in the House races. The Maine Senate would determine the candidate to seat in the Senate and the Supreme Judicial Court determines county races and statewide referendums.
The recount began at 8:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 19, at the Department of Public Safety building on Commerce Drive in Augusta.
District 45 represents the towns of Burnham, Freedom, Knox, Montville, Palermo, Thorndike, Troy and Unity.
