Improper passing blamed in Northport Avenue collision

Belfast — Improper passing on the part of one driver was the cause of a two-vehicle accident on Northport Avenue Monday morning, Feb. 17, according to the accident report from the Belfast Police Department.

The report stated the collision was in the vicinity of the Circle K convenience store. The crash occurred at about 9:20 a.m. as 51-year-old John H. Merry of Swanville was headed south in a 2012 cargo van. According to the report, Merry was in the process of overtaking 60-year-old Jacquline Lacoste of Belfast, who was operating a 2006 Toyota SUV. Lacoste was preparing to turn left into a driveway when Merry's van collided with Lacoste's SUV.

The report stated Merry was passing Lacoste improperly at the time of the accident.

Merry was not injured in the crash, but Lacoste complained of pain at the scene and Belfast Ambulance attendants responded to treat her for her injuries.

Lacoste's vehicle was towed from the scene due to front end damage. Merry's van sustained minor damage on the center of the passengers side.
