In regional final rematch, Cummings strikes again as Lions edge Warriors
Belfast — Last season, Belfast sophomore Maddy Cummings helped the third-ranked Lions upset previously-undefeated and top-seeded Nokomis of Newport in the regional final en route to the Lions winning the state Class B title.
A year later, as a junior, Cummings is up to her old tricks and proved her worth in the Lions' first game of the 2012 season against those same Warriors.
In a game that proved eerily similar to the regional final 11 months ago, Cummings scored the lone goal of the game on a penalty corner as the Lions (1-0) began their state title defense with a 1-0 win over the visiting Warriors (0-1) Aug. 31.
Cummings scored the game-winner in last year's regional final against the Warriors on a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock.
On Friday, Cummings scored with 23:10 left in the contest, on assists from Katrina Lapham and Kristine Mehuren.
Mehuren inserted to Lapham on the penalty corner, who found Cummings in the box for the game's only goal.
Julia Ward turned away 10 shots in the cage for Belfast, while Kendra Underhill made two saves on three shots in goal for Nokomis. The Warriors held an 18-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Belfast coach Allen Holmes chalked Cummings' second straight game-winning goal against the Warriors up to a mere coincidence.
"We don't talk too much about that stuff," he said. "We just try to play and not get our heads swelled up."
Holmes said Ward also had a "huge game for us" as the Warriors dominated "the last 12-14 minutes of the game."
"We couldn't get the ball downfield," he said. "Everything we tried they stopped. Julie had the bulk of her saves in the last half of the second period."
