Islesboro sunk by Rangeley in quarterfinal playoffNo. 1 Lakers too talented for island Eagles in game at Augusta Civic Center
Augusta — Facing the top overall seed in the Western Class D tournament, the ninth-ranked Islesboro girls basketball team had to play a perfect game Tuesday, Feb. 19 against No. 1 Rangeley if it hoped to keep its season alive.
While the Eagles fared well against the heavily-favored Lakers, they were far from perfect as Rangeley eliminated Islesboro with a 52-28 quarterfinal playoff victory at the Augusta Civic Center.
Islesboro's season ended at 9-11.
The Lakers (18-1) now move onto the regional semifinals where they will face No. 4 Forest Hills of Jackman (16-3), which defeated No. 5 Greater Portland Christian (12-6) 48-34 in another quarterfinal game Tuesday morning.
Rangeley defeated Forest Hills in its only meeting of the season — a 46-32 decision Feb. 2 in Rangeley.
On Tuesday against Islesboro, the Lakers jumped out of the gate early and often on the islanders, taking a 17-2 first-quarter lead, a 29-10 edge at halftime and a 45-17 cushion after three quarters.
Ally Craig scored 15 points in the losing effort for Islesboro, while Autumn Johnson added seven and Eleanor Snyder, Krystal Randlett and Brandy Sieakiewicz, all two.
For Rangeley, Taylor Esty and Seve Deery-DeRaps each netted 13 points, while Tori Letarte added 10; Abby Abbott, eight; Blayke Morin, six; and Emina Gunic, two.
The Lakers were 7-of-13 (54 percent) from the foul line, while the Eagles were 1-of-3 (33 percent).
The game got out of hand in a hurry in the first quarter with the Eagles managing a mere field goal from Craig against seven field goals from the Lakers, including an eight-point effort from Esty, the team's 6-foot-1-inch sophomore forward.
Rangeley continued to roll through the game's first three quarters, outscoring the islanders by a significant margin before the Eagles outscored the Lakers 11-7 in the final eight minutes.
