January Men benefit at Unity College Centre
Unity — The January Men will perform a concert in honor of Judy Rock, beloved friend, neighbor and pillar of the community, Sunday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. at Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot St. Tickets are by donation at the door; proceeds will help offset Rock's medical expenses.
The January Men are beginning their 17th year of singing together. In January 1996, Gordon Bok of Camden gathered a men’s chorus, The January Men, to sing traditional and working songs of many cultures. In need of tenors, the group soon expanded to include two women and became The January Men And Then Some. Two charter members still sing with the a cappella group today.
The January Men have performed at various concert halls, festivals, coffeehouses and celebrations around the state of Maine. They also are famous for their short, unannounced drive-by concerts at banks, hardware stores, assisted living centers, bagel shops, etc. The singers can be heard on six Bok recordings — “Gatherings,” “In The Kind Land,” “Dear to Our Island,” “Herrings in the Bay,” “In Concert” and “Because You Asked.”
A potluck dinner will follow the concert at around 5 p.m. For more information about what to bring, contact Beth Alma at Bethalma3@yahoo.com.
