Kiwanis hosts Grand Raffle winner for lunch
The winner of the Rockland Kiwanis Club’s 2013 Grand Raffle was a special guest at the club’s regular Monday lunch meeting at the Samoset Resort on September 9th, a week after being notified that his lucky ticket had been drawn.
Keith Drew, who is the Allstate Insurance Agent in Rockland, donated $100 to purchase one of the 425 Grand Raffle tickets that were available for sale. Kiwanis members achieved an 85 percent sell-out, which allowed the club to reach its raffle budget and to net over $15,000 for the annual fund raising event.
The money raised supports the club’s charitable donation efforts, which include scholarships for graduating high school students who reside in Knox County; Special Olympics of the Midcoast; Trekkers and sponsored youth programs like the Oceanside East High School Key Club. Additional beneficiaries, among many others, include Rockland District Nursing Association; Life Flight of Maine; local EMS programs; the Kiwanis International and World Health Organization’s effort to eliminate maternal and neo-natal tetanus; and the New England Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute.
The top two ticket sellers were past club president Jackie Harjula of Thomaston, with 76 tickets; and past club president, long time club treasurer and Grand Raffle Chair, Sumner Kinney of Thomaston, with 53 tickets. Harjula sold the winning ticket.
Kiwanis president Amy Pease of Union expressed the appreciation of the club’s membership for those individuals who contribute to the Grand Raffle, stating, “…there are many who donate to this signature event who do it to help others, several of whom purchase multiple tickets year after year”.
