Ladies Auxiliary starts pet food pantry

Jan 29, 2014

Local animal shelters have seen a large increase in people relinquishing their animals and simply abandoning them because they can no longer afford their care. In response to the growing need, members of the Randall Collins VFW Post 3108 Ladies Auxiliary in Belfast have formed a nonprofit pet food pantry for area residents.

The pantry is held every month on the third Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The VFW at 34 Field St. in Belfast has donated the downstairs hall to hold the event and store food and supplies. Pet nail trims are also offered at the pantry for a donation of $10.

The first pantry was held on Dec. 21, at which almost 200 pounds of food were distributed. The pantry is open to all, but there is a limit to the amount of food and supplies given to each family so as many families as possible can receive assistance. The proceeds and donations are used to purchase more food and supplies.

To donate food or supplies, please call 322-3237 to arrange for pick-up. If you would like to donate money please do so via Paypal and send the funds to hjb04915@yahoo.com. Checks may be mailed to Heidi Blood, 152 New England Road, Searsmont, Maine 04973. For more information, call 322-3237 or visit "Waldo County Pet Food Supplies Pantry" on Facebook.
