Ladies Auxiliary starts pet food pantry
Local animal shelters have seen a large increase in people relinquishing their animals and simply abandoning them because they can no longer afford their care. In response to the growing need, members of the Randall Collins VFW Post 3108 Ladies Auxiliary in Belfast have formed a nonprofit pet food pantry for area residents.
The pantry is held every month on the third Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The VFW at 34 Field St. in Belfast has donated the downstairs hall to hold the event and store food and supplies. Pet nail trims are also offered at the pantry for a donation of $10.
The first pantry was held on Dec. 21, at which almost 200 pounds of food were distributed. The pantry is open to all, but there is a limit to the amount of food and supplies given to each family so as many families as possible can receive assistance. The proceeds and donations are used to purchase more food and supplies.
