It’s time for another installment of our pet food reviews. This week’s review is going to focus on Earthborn Holistic. Like our last review, this post will cover the specific formulas we stock, the additional items made by Earthborn Holistic, where the ingredients come from, some history about the company, which pets might benefit the most from eating Earthborn Holistic, and the star rating from Dog Food Advisor.
Earthborn Holistics is owned by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc and is based out of Indiana. Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc has been in operation since 1924. All of Earthborn’s dry dog and cat food as well as their moist dog dinners are manufactured in the United States. Their wet cat food is made in Thailand. In terms of where they source the ingredients for their foods, all but the lamb meal and flaxseed come from the United States. Australia and New Zealand supply the lamb meal and the flaxseed comes from Canada.
Outside of their pet food, Earthborn also takes steps toward environmental awareness and sustainability. All of Earthborn’s packaging is made in the US using clean, natural gas as opposed to crude oil. Their packaging is also light and reduced in size so more packages can fit on delivery trucks which reduces the the amount of fuel used in the supply chain. All of the printing for the packaging, informational brochures, and promotional material uses non-toxic soy ink which comes from a renewable resources (soybeans) unlike petroleum inks, and breaks down easier in the recycling process. Earthborn also has a program called UPCs for Trees where customers can send in their UPCs and in turn, Earthborn will plant a tree in a heavily deforested area. One UPC from a 28lb bag of food equals one tree (you can see the whole UPC to tree break down here).
We currently carry Earthborn’s Natural Grain-Free line for both cats and dogs, as well as the canned grain-free for cats. The different dry formulas in this line for dogs are Primitive Natural, Coastal Catch, Meadow Feast, Great Plains Feast, Weight Control, and Large Breed. For cats there is Primitive Feline and Wild Sea Catch for dry and Harbor Harvest, Monterey Medley, Catalina Catch, and Chicken Catcciatori for the canned. There is also an additional line of food, called Natural, for both dogs and cats that is not grain-free. They also have moist dinners for dogs. While we do not stock Natural or the moist dinners, we would be happy to special order them for any customers who may be interested.
The Earthborn Natural Grain-free line is a great, budget friendly food for those that are looking to have their pet on a grain-free diet. All of the dog formulas, with the exception of Great Plains Feast, are gluten-free and both cat formulas are gluten-free.
If you have a dog that needs a diet higher in protein with below-average carbohydrates, Primitive Natural is a great formula to try. There’s is also a limited ingredient diet, Meadow Feast, that is great for dogs that have a sensitive stomach or allergies as it is a single protein (lamb) and free of grains. Weight Control is their lower in fat option that features chicken. It is also rich with fiber from vegetables and fruit like peas, blueberries, cranberries, and more that help your dog stay full. If you have a large breed dog (dogs who, in adulthood, would be 50lbs or over), Large Breed would be a good choice as it is fortified with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to help maintain healthy joint cartilage and l-carnitine to help burn fat while maintaining lean muscle mass.
Dog Food Advisor gives Large Breed, Coastal Catch, and Great Plains feast 4.5 stars out of 5, Meadow Feast and Weight Control are rated as 4 out of 5 stars, and Primitive Natural rates a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. Their analysis concludes that all but the Primitive Natural contain an average to above average protein level while the Primitive Natural rates a bit higher because it has a higher level of protein (and biologically dogs thrive better on a mostly protein based diet. So the higher the amount of protein, the higher the rating).
As an added bonus, all three of out LBC locations offer the Earthborn Frequent Buyer card! After your tenth bag of food, your eleventh is free.
