Lion boys tie, girls fall to Eagles in opening pitch play
The Belfast boys and girls soccer teams kicked off the 2013 high school season on Friday, Sept. 6 against Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, with both Lion squads anxious to earn their first wins of the regular season.
Both Waldo County teams will have to wait a bit longer, however, as the Lion boys earned a 2-2, double-overtime tie in Newcastle and the Lion girls were blanked at home 3-0.
Belfast 2, Lincoln Academy 2 (2OT)
At Newcastle Sept. 6, the Lions and Eagles battled through two 40-minute halves and two five-minute overtimes, before settling for a stalemate.
Christian Williams scored both goals for Belfast, on assists from Jack Schnetzer and Fouad Al-Matrouk, while Kaleb Buchwalder scored both goals for Lincoln Academy.
Lincoln Academy held a 23-16 edge in shots and a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sam Kulikowski made 15 saves in net for the Lions and Wally Morris eight saves for the Eagles.
Lincoln Academy 3, Belfast 0
At Belfast Sept. 6, the Lions could not muster any goal-scoring offense against the visiting Eagles, falling by three goals.
Leslie Sandefur, Hayden Campbell and Lily Davis scored goals in the winning effort for Lincoln Academy.
Grace Davis made eight saves in net for Belfast, while Miranda Achorn made six saves for Lincoln Academy. The Lions attempted 11 shots and took two corner kicks.
