Lion diamond athletes ready for playoff hunt

Belfast — The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Belfast Area High School baseball team:

Coach/years coached current team: George Ross, 33rd year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 7-9, 15th in Eastern Class B. The Lions did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Seniors Zach Collier (third base, pitcher, outfield) and Greg Clark (shortstop, pitcher); juniors Will Hyland (third base, outfield), Kyle Artkop (catcher), Matt Smith (pitcher, first base, outfield), Sam Kulikowski (catcher, second base) and Drew Stanley (third base, pitcher); and sophomores Alex Canning (first base, outfield), Alex Flagg (infield, pitcher), Lucien Gordley-Smith (pitcher, outfield), Peter Spectre (catcher, outfield) and Emery Dinsmore (pitcher, outfield, infield).

Known graduation losses: Damion Benner, Larry Dyer, Lucas Clark and Steve Paul.

Significant impact players: Collier and Clark.

Team strength: Left-handed pitching.

Team goal: To improve on last year's record.

Top league opponents: Camden Hills of Rockport and Morse of Bath.

Outlook: The Lions return five starters from last year's team and have a strong nucleus of players who coach Ross hopes will help the squad make the jump to the next level.

“We hope this season to be in the hunt for a playoff spot and be very competitive,” the veteran coach said.
