Lions, Mustangs use extra week to prepare for state meetSeveral Belfast, Mount View mat athletes in mix for individual state titles
Albeit a week later than originally anticipated, the Mount View and Belfast wrestling teams are preparing for their respective state championship meets.
The Mustangs and Lions were slated to take part in the state championships Feb. 9 at the Augusta Civic Center, but the blizzard that rocked the state that weekend forced the Maine Principals' Association to push the event back one week and, unfortunately for many, to change venues.
All three classes were to be held at the Augusta Civic Center, but now the Lions will go to Fryeburg Academy for the state Class B championships and the Mustangs to Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft for the state Class C championships.
Additionally, the Class A state championships will be held in Sanford.
Both Mount View coach Hamilton Richards and Belfast coach Rick Kelley are relatively unfazed and upbeat with the extra week of preparation.
"I think it only helps us because we're starting to peak at the right time," said Kelley. "The way the staff and I are looking at it, that just gives us another week to get that much better. Like everyone else we were ready to go last Saturday, but hey, I'll take 3-4 more days of practice anytime."
"I think it will help us overall," said Richards. "Mostly it gives us another week to perfect technique and get conditioning up to snuff."
Richards said James Blanchette stands to benefit the most from the extra week off as he has "been fighting illness and injury for the last 3-4 weeks and his endurance has really fallen off."
