Lions split against Eagles in May 9 court play

The Belfast boys and girls tennis teams squared off with Erskine Academy of South China on Friday, May 9, as the two high school squads earned a split against the Eagles.

The Lion girls secure a 3-2 win in Belfast, while the Lion boys fell 5-0 to the Eagles in South China.

Girls tennis

Belfast 3, Erskine Academy 2

At Belfast May 9, the Lions edged out the Eagles and picked up the win.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Mariah Hurd beat Emma Wilkinson, 8-6; Ashley Keene lost to Brittany Ibbitson, 5-8; and Amalia Kockerols beat Sparkles Fraser, 8-3.

In doubles, Mackenzie Moore and Madison Pickering lost to Sami Lamoore and Elena Luo, 9-8 (7-3); and Lucy Bonneville and Hannah Green beat Jordan Bourie and Kayla Parsons, 8-4.

Belfast 5, Winslow 0

At Winslow May 5, the Lions roared to victory over the Black Raiders.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Mariah Hurd beat Brennah O’Connell, 8-2; Ashley Keene beat Kalianna Carpenter, 8-3; and Amalia Kockerols beat Bria Crosby, 8-4.

In doubles, Lacey Durkee and MacKenzie Moore beat Lillie Pellerin and Katie Gallant, 8-5; and Madison Pickering and Lucy Bonneville beat Sally Greenlaw and Caitlyn Hiller, 8-6.

Lincoln Academy 3, Belfast 2

At Belfast May 2, the Eagles did enough to emerge victorious over the host Lions.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, Mariah Hurd beat Nettie Hoagland, 8-1; Ashley Keene lost to Eloise Kelly, 4-8; and Amalia Kockerols beat Polina Scimone, 9-8 (12-10).

In doubles, Lacey Durkee and Mackenzie Moore beat Mana Hrano and Alex Welch, 8-1; and Madison Pickering and Lucey Bonneville lost to Kate Westover and Tessa Walsh, 8-9 (3-7).

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B, Belfast (3-3, 9.7222 points) is 11th, while Presque Isle (4-0, 27.0833 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Boys tennis

Erskine Academy 5, Belfast 0

At South China May 9, the Eagles soared to a convincing win over the visiting Lions.

The individual results, with Belfast players listed first, were: In singles, David Flood lost to Dominic Pizzo, 6-2, 1-6, 4-6; Logan Mitchell lost to Brandon Smith, 2-6, 2-6; and Asa Lewis lost to Richard Preston, 2-6, 3-6.

In doubles, Gustavo Mendez and Eduardo DeSaPinto lost to Cam Crass and June Balantyne, 2-6, 2-6; and Peter Brunette and Ben Flood lost to Kyle Zembroski and Vince Wang, 2-6, 1-6.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B, Belfast (1-5, 0.8333 points) is 14th, while Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston (6-0, 32.4306 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.
