Local boy, 15, charged with OUI after rollover
Police say an intoxicated 15-year-old boy from Northport took a vehicle without the owner's permission Friday night, May 25, and crashed it. A 17-year-old female was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Waldo County Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said the accident occurred on Route 7 in Waldo, and resulted in an operating under the influence charge for the male driver. The 17-year-old passenger was charged with possession of liquor by a minor by way of consumption, Trafton said.
While ambulance personnel responded to the scene and treated the female, Trafton said there was no indication that either she or the young driver was transported to a hospital after the crash.
Trafton said the boy gained access to the 2006 Chevy Malibu, which was registered to 21-year-old Richard Odonnell of Palermo, as he and his female companion were walking by the vehicle.
"He walked by and saw the keys in it," said Trafton.
The youths took the car for a joyride for a short distance before rolling the car over, Trafton said.
Trafton said Odonnell and the youths are familiar with one another.
On the day before the accident, May 24, Odonnell was charged with furnishing liquor to a minor at a Belfast convenience store, but Trafton said it is unclear if Odonnell supplied the alcohol to the youths who allegedly took his car for a ride.
