Long-running wreath project gears up again

Sep 26, 2012

Throughout the month of October, members of The First Church in Belfast will be visiting local businesses to take orders for decorated Christmas wreaths. The wreath project is storied part of the church's history, having begun with a dozen or so wreaths decorated on a parishioner's kitchen table in 1930. The project -- the church's largest fundraiser -- has operated continuously for 82 years. It now process 775 to 800 wreath orders each season.

Wreaths are available in eight sizes and are decorated using all-natural materials, including pine cones, acorns, fruit pits, tansy, moss, berries and pine. Wreaths may also be ordered without decorations. Each wreath is topped off with a hand-crafted bow in one of eight colors.

Approximately 75 members and friends of The First Church volunteer their time and talent annually to decorate the wreaths during late November and early December. In addition to business orders, the church also fills personal orders.

Decorated wreath prices range from $16 to $28 for small and medium sizes (or $12 to $20 undecorated). Wreaths are available in four larger sizes as well.

Wreaths can be shipped throughout the continental United States for $38, which includes the decorated and boxed wreath, an enclosed gift card and UPS charges. Shipped wreaths will be decorated and sent out Nov. 19 through the 21. Local orders will be ready for delivery or pickup at The First Church during the week of Nov. 26 through 30.

A member of the First Church wreath team will contact each business customer by Oct. 31. Orders may also be placed at the annual First Church Christmas Fair Saturday, Nov. 10, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., where sample wreaths will be displayed. Wreaths may also be ordered by calling The First Church office at 338-2282 no later than Monday, Nov. 12.

The proceeds from this annual wreath project support the church's ministries,  including its mission outreach programs throughout the local community (and sometimes beyond).
