Belfast — Waterfall Arts has scheduled two weekend workshops for March, Clay Garden Vessels with Randy Fein of Lincolnville and Gelatin Prints with Abbie Read of Appleton. To register for the workshops or for more information, visit waterfallarts.org or call the office at 338-2222.

In Fein’s workshop, the group will be able to make sculptural planters that can be real conversation pieces for porch or garden. The workshop will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16, from 1 to 5 p.m.; and again on Saturday, March 29, from 1 to 5 p.m., to allow the clay to dry before finishing. Fee for the workshop is $160 plus a $25 materials fee.

A well-known artist and instructor, Fein loves to venture to the tropical waters of the Caribbean to inspire new aquatic clay sculpture. Clay is her material of expression as it inspires touch while offering infinite possibilities for shape and texture.

“I work in the moment; my hands are my tools. I scratch, pinch, push and press; giving life to the shapeless primal clay that is our Mother Earth. Since the dawn of civilization, various cultures have used clay to describe the human form,” she said.

Read’s Gelatin Print workshop will be held Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. She describes gelatin printing as a low tech, kitchen-table-style of making a monoprint on a surface made of Knox unflavored gelatin. Using water-based inks; prints are layered to achieve dense surfaces of imagery, textures and rich color. This type of printmaking can easily be done at home with very little expense and great results. The fee for the workshop is $50 plus a $10 materials fee; beginner to experienced printers are welcome.

Read has taught painting, printmaking, drawing and foundation classes over the years as well as different workshops related to book arts. Her current work consists of mixed media constructions using old books, altered books and found objects.

Courier Publications’ A&E Editor Dagney C. Ernest can be reached at (207) 594-4401, ext. 115; or dernest@courierpublicationsllc.com.

Abbie Read will share the kitchen-table art of gelatin printing at Waterfall Arts.
