Mechanical failure likely cause of single-vehicle crash

Belfast — A mechanical failure was the likely cause of single-vehicle accident at an apartment complex in Belfast Tuesday, April 2.

Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden said Edith Phillips, 74, of Belfast heard “weird noises” coming from her 2006 Mitsubishi utility vehicle when it suddenly accelerated on its own before striking a light pole at 31 Mid Coast Drive.

The light pole embedded itself in the front fender on the passenger side of the vehicle, which caused the vehicle to spin around the base of the pole, McFadden said. The vehicle then struck an outbuilding on the property, but did only minor damage, he said.

McFadden said the vehicle also struck the apartment building on the property, but it did not do any significant damage. Damage to the vehicle was limited to the front-end but no dollar estimate was available.

Phillips was not hurt in the crash and didn't require transportation to the hospital, McFadden said.
