Michelle Smith Joins the Island Institute as Donor Relations Director
The Island Institute is pleased to announce that Michelle Smith has joined the organization as the new donor relations director. She will be responsible for managing the Institute’s fundraising efforts focused on individual donors, including annual fund, membership, and major gifts.
Working closely with members of the Institute’s leadership team and other key staff, Michelle will help to develop fundraising goals and priorities to support the Institute’s mission, strategic plan priorities, and annual work plans, including annual fundraising to support programs and operations, and special multi-year fundraising initiatives and campaigns.
Michelle holds a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Williams College and a master’s degree in Latin American, Caribbean and U.S. Latino Studies from the State University of New York at Albany. Before coming to the Island Institute, she was the associate director of development, based in Yarmouth, Maine, for Safe Passage/Camino Seguro, a nonprofit organization working in Guatemala City to bring hope, education, and opportunity to children and families living in extreme poverty.
“I couldn't be more pleased to have an individual with Michelle's talent and passion joining us,” said Heather Deese, vice president of strategic development for the Island Institute. “She will be a wonderful addition to our team at Island Institute and play a vital role in making sure we have the resources to support great programming.”
