Midcoast art, poetry in ‘The Figure Revealed IV’
Lewiston — The Atrium Art Gallery at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn campus presents “The Figure Revealed IV,” a statewide juried exhibition exclusively focused on work created in the environment of a life-drawing group, through Dec. 14.
The exhibition features more than 80 works by 53 artists with media ranging from pencil and charcoal to oil and watercolor. Midcoast artists are Lois Anne of Rockland, Nancy Morgan Barnes of Searsport, Martha Briana of Northport, Roberta Goschke of Waldoboro and Stevan Hall of Rockport. Elizabeth W. Garber of Belfast, one of the city’s former poets laureate, has written a poem, “Life Drawing Half Hour Pose in Two Voices,” exclusively for the exhibition brochure. She has created many poems in collaboration with painters and sculptors as well as initiating the Poetry and Art Walk at the Belfast Poetry Festival.
The 2012 jury provides another link to the Midcoast. James Strickland of Belfast is known as an artist, theologian, heliocentric and kinetic sculptor and philosopher. His studies of architecture, Japanese temples, ocean navigating, mountaineering and technology illuminate his work, which has been included in more than 100 exhibitions around the country and abroad. Strickland was joined by juror Joel Babb, one of Maine’s most-noted representational painters, known for his large street-level views of historic city districts, cityscapes from an aerial perspective; and woodland landscapes inspired by his home in rural Sumner.
Drawing groups exist around the state, somewhat in isolation. They usually meet once a week for the purpose of drawing, painting or sculpting with a live model, with participants chipping in to pay the model. Exhibit curator Robyn Holman notes that since most of the work is not intended for exhibition but as practice, “we have an opportunity to enter the private world of artist and model and to better understand the tradition they continue — a tradition that began in Europe during the 15th century."
