Midcoast mat trio qualifies for New EnglandsPanther Miller, Windjammer Winchenbach, Mustang Cole make grade
Newport — A Panther, Windjammer and Mustang earned spots in the New England High School Wrestling Championships during a qualifier on Thursday, Feb. 20 at Nokomis High School.
Medomak Valley's Cyril Miller (170 pounds), Camden Hills' Connor Winchenbach (152) and Mount View's Chris Cole (285) qualified during the talent-laden meet.
According to the Maine Principals' Association, the top three finishers in each weight class from the qualifier advance to the New Englands on Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9 at the Providence Career and Technical Center in Providence, R.I.
Three other Midcoast mat athletes came close to qualifying and will be alternates to the New Englands after they placed fourth in their weight classes. They include Camden Hills' Jared Gilbert (195) and Mount View's Jarryd Fonger (132) and Job Mesaric (220).
Class A, B and C student-athletes competed together for spots at the New Englands. In the past, the state individual champions in each weight class at the three state meets — Classes A, B and C — advanced to the New Englands, but that was changed to put all the wrestlers in each class on equal footing during one qualifying meet. Thus, more than one wrestler from a class had the opportunity to qualify.
