Monroe library news
The Monroe Community Library Board has been working on a plan to bring Internet access as well as automation to the library’s catalog. This would also allow patrons access to the Marvel system, which is a catalog of the collections of all participating libraries in Maine. Any citizen with Internet service can already access Marvel from home by going to the Maine State Library link at www.maine.gov. A person can then request the desired materials through Inter-library Loan at their local library. Presently, it is necessary to request materials through the Bangor Public Library or Belfast Public Library, and you must have a library card. Cards are free in Bangor, and $20 per year in Belfast for Monroe residents.
In order to offer these services here, it will be necessary to reduce the hours the library is open so that the library can be staffed with a volunteer at all times to assist patrons. The library is trying out a 15-hour schedule this week to see if this plan is feasible. Hours are: Monday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and 3-4 p.m., Tuesday 4-5 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.. Thursday 10 a.m.-noon and 4-5 p.m. These hours are subject to adjustment and your comments are welcome. Please place them in the pocket on the door.
On a personal note
To anyone who may have tried to call me between 9 a.m. Feb. 7 and 10 a.m. Feb. 8 and got a message that my number of 525-4405 had been disconnected, I apologize. That situation has since been resolved.
