Thorndike — Two Mount View high school sports teams battled opponents in home affairs on Friday, Sept. 6, with the Mustang boys soccer squad securing a 2-0 season-opening win over Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and the Mustang field hockey dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Leavitt of Turner.
Jack Simpson scored an unassisted goal with 34:12 left in the second half and Bryan Jungels added another goal with 15:48 remaining, on an assist from Joey Danna, to give the hosts a shutout victory.
Mikey Hustus made seven saves in net for the Mustangs (1-0), who held a 30-12 edge in shots and 11-2 advantage in corner kicks over the Huskies (0-1). Charles Moriarty made 18 stops in the MCI goal.
The Mustangs also won the jayvee game 3-1.
The Mustangs (0-2) came up one goal shy of knocking off the defending state Class B champs.
The game was scoreless through the first half, then, with 15:20 left in regulation, Hornet Kierstin Leclear scored, on an assist from Sadie Royer, which proved the difference.
Sierra Santomango and Amy Castonguay split time in goal for Leavitt, combining to make five saves. Lily Logiodice toiled in the cage for Mount View as she turned away 3-of-4 shots.
Mount View's jayvees won 1-0 on an unassisted first-half goal by Austyn Thomas.
