Mount View builds slow, steady for future
Brooks — The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Mount View High School golf team:
Coach/years coached current team: Craig Tozier, sixth year.
Last year's record/playoff information: Finished regular season with a 4-8 record. The Mustangs did not have enough golfers to score as a team in the state Class B championships.
Roster: Senior Bo Curtis; juniors Cassidy Gerrish, Kasey Roberts and Ross Delorenzo; sophomores Darrell Roberts and Stephen Koller; and freshmen Brandon Davidson and Jacob Rose.
Known graduation loss: Erik Larrabee.
Significant impact golfers: Gerrish, Delorenzo and Roberts.
Team strengths: Returning golfers, building for the future.
Team goal: To continue to improve every day.
Top league opponents: Camden Hills of Rockport and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.
Outlook: The Mustangs certainly will miss Larrabee, who qualified for the state Class B schoolboy championships last year, but Tozier said his junior class is talented and will hopefully shoulder the load on the links this season.
Gerrish, a co-captain with Delorenzo, qualified for the schoolgirl championships last season and Tozier is “expecting her to do very well this year individually,” while Delorenzo, who worked at Mount View's home golf course — Country View Golf Club in Brooks — moves up to the No. 1 slot this season and “his game has improved as a result of that time that he could spend on the course.
Roberts also has done work over the summer and could be in the mix for a berth in the schoolgirl championships.
“I expect that we will have several individual match wins and a few team wins, and that our returning golfers could qualify for the individual state championships,” said Tozier. “I will only be losing one golfer this year, so next year's team will be even stronger with my three juniors returning and four of this year's newcomers will have had the experience of playing for a year.”
