Thorndike — Mount View High School is collecting donations of towels, shampoo, toothpaste and other items, as well as gift cards to Hannaford, to help needy families in the district.

Cheri Towle, principal at MVHS, said due to early snowfall and intense periods of cold, families in Regional School Unit 3 are struggling to make ends meet between trying to heat their homes and put food on the table.

She noted about 70 percent of the students in RSU 3 qualify for free or reduced lunch.

To help address those needs in the district, Towle said the high school has been gathering supplies to put together shower caddies with towels, soap, shampoo and toothpaste, among other items, to give to students so they can shower when they arrive at the school.

Towle said in addition to hygiene supplies, about $2,000 worth or gift cards to Hannaford have been collected to give to families, as well.

She said she is also trying to connect with a fuel company to possibly be able to provide heating fuel to a needy family.

Towle said if a family is in need of a gift card for groceries or needs other supplies, she encouraged them to contact the high school at 568-3255.

If anyone would like to donate supplies or gift card they can also contact staff at the high school.
