Mount View pins down fifth-place finish at regional
Six Mustangs earn spots in state championship meetBucksport — The Mount View wrestling team competed in the Western Class C championships Saturday, Feb. 2 at Bucksport High School as the Mustangs, along with 13 other mat squads, eyed the coveted regional championship.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, Dirigo of Dixfield, one of the most dominant teams in their region for nearly two decades, brought its "A" game to the regional and dominated the competition.
The Cougars had seven first-place finishers and rolled to the championship, besting the field with ease, finishing 75 points higher than second-place Madison.
The Mustangs finished fifth among 14 teams.
Six Mustang student-athletes qualified for the state Class C championships on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Augusta Civic Center. The wrestlers qualified by virtue of finishing in the top four in their weight class.
James Blanchette and Jarryd Fonger earned second places, while Job Mesaric and Jeffrey Lenio brought home third places and Matt Wheeler and Devan Fuller fourth places.
The team scores were: Dirigo 181, Madison 106, Lisbon of Lisbon Falls 72, Monmouth Academy 71, Mount View 61.5, Winslow 61, Bucksport 35.5, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill 34, John Bapst of Bangor 16, Orono 15, Boothbay Region 14, Hall-Dale of Farmingdale 11,5 and Spruce Mountain of Jay/Livermore Falls and Wiscasset no score.
The individual Mustang results were:
120 pounds — Blanchette received a first-round bye; won by technical fall over Gus Brown, Dir; and lost to Matt Stewart, Buck, 4-0 in the championship final. Blanchette finished second.
132 pounds — Fonger, MtV, received a first-round bye; pinned Reiley Lombardi, Dir, at 3:49; and was pinned by Zachary Stevens, Lis, at 0:57 in the championship final. Fonger finished second.
138 pounds — Wheeler, MtV, received a first-round bye; lost by major decision to Jordan Lord, GSA, 14-0; pinned Joe Mann, Mad, at 1:58; and was pinned by James Gambino, Mon, at 4:55 in the consolation final. Wheeler finished fourth.
145 pounds — Anthony Barnard was pinned by Jesse Hutchinson, Dir, at 4:24; received a bye; and was pinned by Joshua Collier, Lis, at 4:49.
152 pounds — Scott Vaillancourt, MtV, was pinned by Brett Whittemore, Dir, at 1:36; received two byes; and was pinned by Angus Koler, Mon.
160 pounds — Ethan Sewell-Berry, MtV, was pinned by Anthony Salisbury, Win, at 2:40; received two byes; and was pinned by Joseph Foss, Mad, at 1:40.
182 pounds — Lenio, MtV, received a bye; was pinned by Derrin Moreshead, Mad, at 0:13; and received byes to the consolation final. Lenio finished third.
220 pounds — Mesaric, MtV, pinned Tim Allen, GSA, at 0:58; lost to Zach White, Dir, 6-1; pinned Paul Harris, Mon, at 0:45; and pinned Antonio Maulolo, Booth, at 4:37 in the consolation final. Mesaric finished third.
285 pounds — Fuller, MtV, lost to Ryan Malcolm, Mad, 6-4; received a bye; and lost to Cliff Boynton, Dir, 8-5 in the consolation final. Fuller finished fourth.
