Mustang field hockey lone Waldo County team to prevail in Sept. 10 actionBelfast, Mount View, Searsport soccer squads come up short
Waldo County high school teams have been in action on the field hockey and soccer pitches in recent days, with Belfast, Searsport and Mount View seeing heavy play through the start of the regular season.
Among Tuesday, Sept. 10 soccer action, the Belfast boys fell 8-2 to Waterville and the Lion girls also dropped a 10-1 decision to the Purple Panthers, while Mount View girls fell 4-1 to Winslow and the boys lost 5-0 to the Black Raiders. Finally, the Searsport boys lost 5-1 to Dexter.
In field hockey the same day, Mount View bested Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 8-0, while Belfast lost 3-2 to Brewer.
The following is a recap of reported results from recent Waldo County high school games:
Mount View 8, Lincoln Academy 0
At Newcastle Sept. 10, the Mustangs (1-2) galloped past the Eagles (0-3) en route to their first win of the season.
Leading the potent Mount View scoring attack were Reanna Boulay (4 goals), Braley Leadbetter (goal, 3 assists), Risa Fox (goal), Kersey Boulay (goal), Austyn Thomas (goal), Jordan King (assist) and Lauren Richards (assist).
Dinah Bilodeau made three saves on three shots in the cage for Mount View, while Andrea Call made six saves on 14 shots for Lincoln Academy.
Brewer 3, Belfast 2
At Brewer Sept. 10, the Witches (1-2) jumped to an early lead and never trailed as the Lions (0-2) remained winless on the season.
Hannah Bailey and Kylie Nelson scored for Belfast, while Keanna Beal, Rachael Karp and Cassy Green scored for Brewer.
Maddy Littlefield turned away 3-of-6 shots in goal for the Lions, while Brooke Richards turned away 12-of-14 shots for the Witches. Belfast led 10-2 in penalty corners.
Brewer led 1-0 after the first half when Beal scored with 3:52 left and added a second score with 28:52 left in the game by Karp before Bailey cut Belfast's deficit in half with a goal at the 11:54-mark.
Green added an insurance goal for the Witches with 6:54 remaining before Nelson popped in the final goal with 2:44 left.
The Belfast jayvees posted a 3-1 win over Brewer.
Dexter 5, Searsport 1
At Dexter Sept. 10, the Vikings (0-2) could muster only one goal for the second straight game as the visitors fell to the host Tigers (1-1).
Nathan Robichaud scored three goals for Dexter, while Jordan Gudroe and William Stauch had one goal and Aaron Perkins one assist.
Barrett Grant scored for Searsport, on an assist from Jay Burkard.
Dylan Grant and Cody Parks combined to make 18 saves on 28 shots in net for Searsport, while Josh Smith and Chris Rice combined to make seven saves on nine shots for Dexter.
Winslow 5, Mount View 0
At Winslow Sept. 10, the Mustangs could not keep pace with the Black Raiders and were downed via shutout.
Evan Clark had two goals and an assist for Winslow, while David Grant (goal), Taylor Roy (goal) and Conner Wildes (goal) also creased the net for the winners.
Mikey Hustus made eight saves on 16 shots in goal for Mount View, while Alex Berard made six saves on eight shots for Winslow. Winslow led 6-2 in corner kicks.
Bucksport 6, Searsport 1
At Bucksport Sept. 7, the Vikings could not keep up with the Golden Bucks and fell by five goals.
Bailey Graychase, Dustin Colson, Liam Pitchford, Will Thomas and Dylan Robbins scored for Bucksport, while Dylan Grant scored the lone goal for Searsport, on an assist from Barrett Grant.
Ryan Grindle made eight saves on 10 shots in goal for Bucksport, while Bryce Shorey made 19 saves on 29 shots.
Winslow 4, Mount View 1
At Thorndike Sept. 10, the Black Raiders got a pair of early goals from Calli Lavarnway and never trailed as the Mustangs dropped their second straight game.
Lavarnway finished with two goals, while Autumn Poulin and Makenzie Carlow also scored for Winslow. Alexis Strain scored the lone goal for the 'Stangs.
Tori Strain made six saves on 12 shots in net for the hosts, while Hillary Libby made three saves on five shots for Winslow. The Black Raiders held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Maine Central Institute 3, Mount View 0
At Pittsfield Sept. 7, the Mustangs could not crease the net and were shutout by the host Huskies.
Ashley Alton scored two goals for MCI, while Brianna Losee added another in the win. All three goals came in the second half.
“We possessed the ball in their end 80 percent of the game but couldn't score as they packed seven girls back in the box and just cleared up to their forwards,” said Mustang coach David Page. “They, on the other hand, converted their opportunities when they arose.”
Tori Strain made three saves on seven shots for Mount View, while Ryleigh Lord made seven saves on 10 shots for MCI.
