New Tutoring Service for Those With Learning Challenges
A new tutoring service for children and adults with learning challenges is launching at the Office in downtown Belfast. Certified special education consultant and teacher, Alice Beckett, M.Ed., is gearing up to provide individual and small group tutoring for motivated students with a wide range of learning challenges including dyslexia, ADHD and autism spectrum disorders.
A serious problem that experts in secondary education acknowledge is that drop-out rates for students with learning challenges are twice that of other students. Failing grades in school bring about feelings of low self-esteem and public schools rarely have adequate staff or resources to provide the specialized, individual tutoring needed to help these students.
New Horizons Tutoring will use a variety of time tested approaches to help children and adults feel comfortable with the learning experience. Lessons will be offered in a quiet, pleasant area so learners can relax and focus. Tutoring will be designed in a series of units with attainable goals, providing students and their families with daily progress reports to address feelings of anxiety about their progress. New Horizons Tutoring anticipates future events for children and adults with learning disabilities and their families.
Ms Beckett brings to New Horizons Tutoring more than 25 years of educational consultation, teaching experience, education and training in public education and her excitement about providing help for individuals and families brings hope to the midcoast area. “One-on-one tutoring can be remarkably effective,” she says. “Combine that with specialized teaching approaches and students will succeed.”
