One dead, two injured in Prospect crash
Prospect — One driver from Frankfort died and two more people were transported to a local hospital as the result of a traffic accident on Route 1A at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, Nov. 8.
Waldo County Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said 79-year-old William Dunham of Frankfort died at the scene of the accident. A Frankfort couple, 64-year-old Powell Johnson and 49-year-old Susan Johnson, were injured in the accident and both were transported by ambulance to the hospital, Trafton said.
Lt. Jason Trundy with the Waldo County Sheriff's Office said the accident occurred when Dunham crossed the center-line for an unknown reason and struck the Johnson vehicle, which was approaching in the oncoming lane. A third vehicle came upon the crash moments later and the driver of that vehicle was unable to avoid clipping the two vehicles in the roadway. That driver, Trundy said, was not hurt and the damage to the vehicle was relatively minor.
Information about the identity of the third driver was not available.
Dunham died at the scene, Trafton said.
Weather conditions likely were a factor in the accident, Trundy said, as the road surface was wet due to the heavy rains and recent snowfall.
Deputy Arthur Smith responded to the accident and is the primary investigating officer, said Trafton.
