Montville — A 17-year-old boy from Palermo incurred injuries that landed him in the hospital Sunday morning, May 4, when an early morning encounter with a deer on Halldale Road led to him losing control of the pickup he was driving.

According to the accident report at the Waldo County Sheriff's Office, the youth was headed northwest on Halldale Road in Montville in a 2002 Ford pickup when the animal entered the roadway. The report stated the youth swerved to the right to avoid hitting the animal, then traveled onto the dirt shoulder of the road. As the vehicle entered a corner, the driver over-corrected to the left, causing the truck to go into a sideways skid. While skidding, the truck overturned, coming to rest on the drivers side.

The youth complained of pain in the neck and shoulders, and Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Service attendants transported him to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast to be treated.

The truck was towed from the scene. Police stated the pickup sustained about $5,000 worth of damage.
