Bar Harbor — Two state championship performances, a bundle of near-state title efforts and plenty of top overall competitions resulted when talented Midcoast student-athletes headed to the state Class B track-and-field championship meet June 2 at Mount Desert Island High School.

With the threat of rain in the forecast, local athletes from Medomak Valley, Belfast, Mount View of Thorndike, Camden Hills and Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston put their best feet forward, with Panther Yannick Price-Prevot (discus) and Lion Marcus Riley (long jump) securing state crowns.

Many area athletes finished as state runners-up by the slimmest of margins, highlighted by Camden Hills' Caleb Pease, who was second in three sprint events, all by fractions of seconds.

Athletes needed to reach qualifying standards during the regular season and league championship meet to earn the right to attend the state competition.

The state champion in each event from the Class A, B and C meets, along with the next best three performances in that event, regardless of class, qualified for the 67th New England high school championships on Saturday, June 9 at Thornton Academy in Saco.

That means Price-Prevot and Riley, as state champs, automatically qualified for the New Englands, as did potentially other local athletes who had top all-around performances that fell in the above criteria.

In the boys state meet, York and Falmouth tied for the team title, while Medomak Valley finished fourth to top the local squads. In the girls state meet, Waterville dominated en route to the victory.
