Belfast — With the softball team unbeaten and the baseball squad winless, the goal remained the same for Medomak Valley on Wednesday, May 3  — namely, to secure victories — as the Panthers hit the road to face Belfast.

And, in the end, the Panther softball team remained undefeated and the baseball squad notched its first win of the high school spring campaign.

The Panther softball team piled on the runs and prowled to an 18-3, 5-inning victory, while the Panther baseball team posted a 7-2 win.

The games originally were scheduled for Monday, May 1, but were moved to Wednesday due to rain and unplayable fields.

The following is a breakdown of both contests:

Baseball

Medomak Valley 7, Belfast 2

At Belfast May 3, the Panthers tacked on four insurance runs in the final three frames and prowled past the host Lions. Medomak Valley scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. Belfast scored two in the third and one in the seventh.

Leading Medomak Valley at the plate was Cam Robinson (3 runs), Brent Stewart (single, run), Adam Eutsler (3 singles, run), Isaac Eutsler (single, run), Ryan Creamer (single) and Jordan Powell (run).

For Belfast, Skylar Perkins (2 singles), Zach Dyer (single), Grey Dinsmore (double), Luke Hamlin (run), Zach Sheafe (single, run) and Tyler Bartlett (single, run) paced the offense.

Dinsmore, Sheafe and Lewis worked from the hill for the Lions as the trio combined to allow six hits, four walks and two hit batters, with nine strikeouts. Stewart went the distance on the mound for the Panthers, allowing six hits and two walks, with five strikeouts.

The Panthers got on the board early when Isaac Eutsler rapped a two-run single in the first inning and tacked on another in the third when Robinson came home on an error, but the Lions made the score 3-2 in the third when they received an RBI-double from Bartlett and an RBI-single by Perkins, respectively.

But the visitors padded their lead in the later innings.

Medomak Valley had the bases loaded and Isaac Eutsler hit a slow roller back to the first baseman Tristan Roberts, who tumbled making a play on the ball and threw to the plate from the ground to force out the lead runner.

The ball got away from the Lion catcher Dyer and two runs came in to put Medomak Valley ahead 5-2.

The visitors continued to pull away when Creamer plated Isaac Eutsler on a suicide squeeze bunt in the sixth inning and Stewart scored another run in the seventh for Medomak Valley.

The Lions plated a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-single by Perkins, but a Belfast base runner was tagged out to end the game.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (2-3, 3.5938 points) is ninth, while Medomak Valley (1-3, 2.9688 points) is 11th. Hermon (5-0, 11.0938 points) is first in the 18-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Softball

Medomak Valley 18, Belfast 3 (5 inns.)

At Belfast May 3, the Panthers piled on the runs throughout and prevailed by mercy-rule over the host Lions. Medomak Valley scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, five in the third and four in the fourth and fifth frames, while Belfast scored one in the first, third and fourth innings.

Leading the Medomak Valley hit parade was Addie Jameson (double, RBI, run), Maddy White (single, RBI, 4 runs), Cassie Smeltzer (double, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Gabby DePatsy (double, RBI, 2 runs), Aubrey Schaeffer (2 runs), Abby Nelson (double, 2 singles, 3 runs), Kayla Donlin (2 singles, double, 3 runs), Hallie Kunesh (double, single, 2 RBIs, run), Lydia Simmons (2 RBIs, run), Sadie Cohen (run) and Emily Wotton (double, RBI).

For Belfast, Olivia Lovejoy (single, run), Brooke Richards (single, RBI), Karagen Stone (2 singles), Macy Gale (run) and Maya Cunningham (run) paced the offense.

Addie Jameson and Gabby DePatsy pitched for the Panthers, allowing four hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts. Gia Davila pitched for the Lions, allowing 11 hits and six walks, with five strikeouts.

The Panthers led 3-1 in the early going and extended that advantage over the next four innings.

Donlin, who started the inning with a single, scored on an error, while Addie Jameson made the score 5-1 with an RBI-double, as she plated White.

The visitors tallied five runs in the third inning when Nelson scored on a bases-loaded walk, Smelzter rapped a two-run double, Addie Jameson plated a run on an RBI-groundout and Smeltzer scampered home with the team’s 10th run on a passed ball.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Belfast (1-4, 0.6250 points) is 16th, while Medomak Valley (4-0, 13.3594 points) is first in the 18-team region. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs.
