Ryan was named the Waldoboro school’s champion and will compete in the Maine Northern Regional in Ellsworth.

School-wide competitions for the 2013 Poetry Out Loud program will conclude Wednesday, Jan. 16 around the state (and around the nation). Maine’s Northern Regionals will be held Wednesday, Feb. 6 at The Grand in Ellsworth; and Southern Regionals will be held Wednesday, Feb. 13 at City Theatre in Biddeford. The Maine State Finals will take place Wednesday, March 20 at Husson College’s Gracie Theater in Bangor.

The competition begins in the classroom, where students memorize a poem, then recite them before a panel of judges, who determine each school’s champions. The champions compete at the regional level, with winners going on to the state finals. On Monday and Tuesday, April 29 and 30, students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico will compete in the National Finals at Washington, D.C. where $50,000 in awards and school stipends for the purchase of poetry books will be awarded.

Poetry Out Loud is presented by the National Endowment of the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. For more information about Maine’s participation, visit the Maine Arts Commission website at mainearts.maine.gov.
