Belfast — Police charged a Belfast man with multiple counts of gross sexual assault of a 6-year-old girl the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden said his department was contacted by officials at Waldo County General Hospital after they observed “key indicators” that the girl was assaulted. McFadden and Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham responded to the report and began investigating.

As a result of that investigation, McFadden said he and Cunningham were able to establish probable cause to arrest 64-year-old Zebedee Thompson of Patterson Hill Road, and charge him with six counts of gross sexual assault.

Gross sexual assault is a Class A crime punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine of $50,000.

McFadden said because of the speed of the investigation, he expects more charges will be filed against Thompson by the department. He said he also anticipates the district attorney's office will bring additional charges against Thompson, as well.

He said officers contacted social service providers in the area in an effort to make sure the victim received as much help as she could.

McFadden said Thompson was scheduled to appear in court at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, to be arraigned.

Waldo County Deputy District Attorney Eric Walker said Thompson was initially arraigned on one charge of unlawful sexual contact, Class B, during a court appearance in Wiscassett Wednesday afternoon. Thompson's bail was set at $50,000 surety or $25,000 cash, Walker said.

Thompson also has conditions that prohibit him from having any contact with the victim or children under the age of 16.

Walker said Thompson was unable to post bail and is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail.

Walker said he anticipates additional charges will be brought against Thompson pending the completion of the police investigation.
