Police: Convicted sex offender rams pickup into girlfriend's car
Unity — A convicted sex offender was arrested on several charges after police say he purposefully ran his truck into his girlfriend's car head-on because he thought she was out with another man.
Polica arrested 32-year-old Derek Wilson of Unity on the night of Friday, Aug. 9, after a series of incidents that allegedly occurred at a residence on Hunter Road in Unity beginning at 11:36 p.m.
Waldo County Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said police responded to a call from Wilson's live-in girlfriend, who was calling from a neighbor's home to report Wilson had just struck her car head-on as she was returning home after being away for a few hours during the day.
"She said she had been gone for part of the day and that he was home drinking," said Trafton.
The woman also told police Wilson sometimes becomes angry and belligerent when he drinks. On the day of the incident, Trafton said Wilson was accusing the woman of being out with another man, even after she denied it several times.
As the woman returned home in a Volkswagen Beetle, she headed down the long driveway to their home and spotted Wilson was sitting in the drivers' seat of his Ford F350 pickup truck. As she approached the house, Trafton said Wilson started to drive toward her.
"He comes down the driveway and rams her head-on," said Trafton.
The impact was hard enough to cause significant damage to the car and some front end damage to the truck.
"The airbags deployed in her vehicle," Trafton said.
As the woman exited the vehicle and started running to a neighbor's house, Trafton said Wilson drove around the car, stopped at the end of the driveway and appeared to be backing up.
"She was afraid he was going to ram into her again," said Trafton.
Trafton said the woman was so afraid of Wilson that she lost one of her shoes while running to the neighbor's house, but never stopped to retrieve it. The woman was not seriously injured in the incident.
Wilson, said Trafton, also called police to report the vehicle accident as police were en route to respond to the initial complaint.
Police arrested Wilson on charges of domestic violence reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, domestic violence assault, driving to endanger and operating under the influence.
Trafton said Wilson is a convicted sex offender who served five years in prison after he was convicted on a gross sexual assault charge in Skowhegan in 2002.
Wilson is scheduled to appear at Waldo County Superior Court Thursday, Sept. 26.
