Police: Man attempts assault in front of officer at Front Street PubMan also found in possession of Oxycontin pill
Belfast — A Front Street Pub patron was placed under arrest after attempting to assault another patron in front of a police officer, Belfast Police Chief Michael McFadden said.
Officer Travis Spencer responded to a call reporting a disturbance at Front Street Pub Friday night, Aug. 29, according to the police report. When he arrived at Front Street, Spencer found a member of the pub's security staff restraining Benjamin Staples, 21, of Belfast, outside the establishment.
Spencer told the bouncer, who was holding Staples to the ground, to let the man up, McFadden said.
After he was released, Staples "sprang up and started running across Front Street to assault, or try to assault, the person he had been fighting with," McFadden said.
Spencer witnessed the attempted assault and intervened, McFadden said. Staples, though initially resisting, was placed under arrest, according to police. Spencer searched Staples and found an Oxycontin pill in his possession, McFadden said.
Police charged Staples with possession of Schedule W drugs, assault, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
