Police on lookout for damaged SUV involved in accident
Belfast — Belfast police officers are seeking the public's help with tracking down a white Chevrolet Equinox that was reportedly involved in a property damage accident on Swan Lake Avenue early Sunday morning, Sept. 16.
Belfast Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said the vehicle initially came to the attention of police just after 1 a.m., when a woman calling from the Swanville-Belfast town line reported seeing the SUV pull over onto the roadside. Cunningham said the caller stated that a person got out of the passenger side of the vehicle and smashed out a window and the headlights before getting back into the SUV.
Cunningham said the complainant reported the vehicle took off and was headed back toward Swanville.
At 1:29 a.m., Cunningham said, a man residing at the top of Holmes' hill on Swan Lake Avenue in Belfast called police to report that he "heard a loud bang and a sound like something crashing."
The man stated that he went outside 15 minutes prior to calling police to investigate what the noise might have been and located pieces of a tail light in a turn-around off Swan Lake Avenue.
"That's where they were apparently doing donuts and hit the [utility] pole," said Cunningham of the unknown driver. "It's kind of a mess, the vehicle."
Cunningham said police went to the turn-around spot and recovered a rear tail light lens and what appeared to be the exterior cover for the gas cap, which Cunningham said was white in color.
Using the items located at the scene, Cunningham said, police were able to determine that the vehicle is a white Chevrolet Equinox, though the year is unknown at this time.
Anyone with information about the vehicle or the accident is asked to call the Belfast Police Department at 338-5255.
