Police probe one-car crash in which driver, passenger fled scene
Liberty — Police are investigating a one-car crash that was reported on Steven Pond Road Tuesday night, Oct. 15, in which a Searsmont man and his passenger left the scene.
According to the accident report at Waldo County Sheriff's Office, 40-year-old Jason Norwood, of Searsmont, was headed west on Stevens Pond Road in a 1998 Chevrolet and was driving too fast when he approached a curve, failed to remain in the proper lane and went off the road. The vehicle came to rest after striking a tree.
The crash report stated both Norwood and his passenger, 56-year-old James Ross, fled the scene before deputies arrived, but Ross later sought medical attention at a local hospital for facial injuries he sustained in the collision.
Deputy Darrin Moody detailed the outcome of his interview with Ross in his report.
"I spoke to James [Ross] and he stated he had got a ride from Jason [Norwood] to go to the store," stated Moody. "James [Ross] stated Jason [Norwood] was the operator and he had been drinking but did not know how much."
Lt. Jason Trundy with the Waldo County Sheriff's Office said Thursday morning, Oct. 17, the sheriff's office is still investigating the crash and charges are pending against Norwood.
