Belfast — Police arrested a Searsport man after he allegedly stole a car earlier this summer and while driving it became involved in a series of minor accidents at a local grocery store parking lot.

Belfast police officers charged 25-year-old Eric Robinson of Searsport with unauthorized use of property Friday, Aug. 24, on the same day the Searsport Police Department arrested Robinson on a warrant in connection with the alleged car theft. Robinson was also being held at the Waldo County Jail on a probation hold.

Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden said a resident on Swan Lake Avenue in Belfast reported their vehicle — a 1997 Ford Escort — was stolen from their home at about 10:30 p.m. June 22. McFadden said the owners of the vehicle identified Robinson as the person they believed stole their vehicle, said McFadden.

McFadden said police learned in the weeks that followed the reported vehicle theft, Robinson had driven the car occasionally and while doing so he had been involved in accidents at the Swan Lake Grocery parking lot in Swanville.

"He was involved in a number of fender-benders," said McFadden.

On one occasion, McFadden said Robinson struck a Dumpster with the Escort, and the impact did some damage to the windshield.

The vehicle has since been returned to its owners, said McFadden.

Robinson is scheduled to appear at Fifth District Court in Belfast Tuesday, Oct. 2.
