Porcupine Alert!

By PenBay Veterinary Associates | May 16, 2014

The weather report for this weekend could mean an increased risk of unwanted dog and porcupine interaction!

Dr. Bjorn Lee at PenBay Veterinary Associates recommends that you keep your dog on a leash during dusk, dark, and dawn during this cold, rainy, spring weather.  Porcupines are most active in the early evening and early morning when dogs are also heading out for bathroom breaks.  We have already had several emergency calls this week from dogs getting quilled.

If your dog has a run in with a porcupine it is best to call your veterinarian for advice.  It may be possible to remove the quills yourself, but many cases require your dog to be sedated by a veterinarian.  It is important that all quills get  removed as they can migrate within the dog and pose significant health problems and lead to surgery.
